Diabetes is a person’s condition of high blood sugar or glucose. This condition keeps your body from turning food into energy. Normally the body gets energy after eating. Digestion breaks down part of the food into fuel called glucose. Then glucose leaves the digestive system and enters the bloodstream. This starts to raise the body’s blood glucose level. Glucose travels to the cells to be burned as fuel For glucose to enter the cells insulin is needed. Insulin is produce by the pancreas. It travels in the blood and acts like a key, unlocking the cells so that glucose can enter. Then the cells have glucose to burn for energy, and the blood sugar levels stays steady. There are two types of diabetes. The type 1 diabetes, which is insulin dependent and the type 2 diabetes, which is non-insulin dependent. In type 1 diabetes, there is a shortage of insulin due to failure of the pancreas while in type 2 diabetes the insulin is enough but the body cannot use it.
